What is this?
Every individual earning income or receiving a scholarship in Hungary needs a Tax ID (Adóazonosító jel). This guide walks you through the NAV application process.
How it works

Identify the correct form: 'T34'. This is the universal form for natural persons to request a tax card for the first time.

Submit via the 'ONYA' (Online Form Completion Application) if you already have an Ügyfélkapu (Client Gate) login.

Alternatively, visit any NAV client service in person with your passport and address card. No appointment is strictly necessary but recommended.

Receive your 10-digit tax number immediately on paper; the physical plastic card will be mailed to you within a few weeks.

Things worth knowing
- The Tax ID is a 10-digit number starting with the digit 8.
- If you are under 25, obtaining this card is the first step to unlocking your PIT (income tax) exemption.
- You can work through a Student Union (Iskolaszövetkezet) to get even better net-to-gross ratios.
- You don't need a job offer to get a Tax ID; you can apply for it as soon as you have a registered address.
- The first issuance of the card is free of charge.
